Melbourne United
From static scrolling signage to perimeter screens that adapt, game after game.
How LED Media helped Melbourne United replace static signage with over 20 metres of courtside LED, so sponsor branding and screen configuration can change from one game to the next.
Key wins
- Selected through a competitive tender against four or five companies, standing out on price, supply chain reliability, local manufacturing, and ongoing service
- Investment paid back within a couple of years, with a product lifecycle well beyond that, and additional revenue generated by hiring the units out during the off-season
- Configuration changed game to game, giving Melbourne United the flexibility to update branding, partner content, and layout for every event
The challenge
Before working with LED Media, Melbourne United ran static scrolling signage at John Cain Arena, physical skins fitted to a rotating mechanism, timed to cycle through content at a set pace. While it was a genuinely innovative setup in its day, by the time Melbourne United began exploring an upgrade, LED represented a real step forward.
Mark Boyd, the Chief Operating Officer, and the club needed to be confident the investment would stack up. The decision wasn’t a given, it required a clear business case showing the spend could be recovered, and a competitive process to find the right partner to deliver it.
What we delivered
Melbourne United went through a formal tender process, assessing four or five companies against price, supply chain reliability, whether units were locally made, and the quality of ongoing service and support. LED Media stood out clearly through that process, particularly from a long-term partnership standpoint.
The result is more than 20 metres of courtside LED signage, broken into three separate configurable sections, replacing static signage wherever possible across the venue. The system gives Melbourne United’s game day team the ability to change configuration, branding, and partner content from one game to the next.
Our approach
Melbourne United built a clear internal business case for the investment, one they were confident would pay for itself well within the product’s lifecycle. Since installation, a rostered team of three to four staff manage the courtside signage as part of their regular game day operations, a process the club describes as relatively quick and easy.
Support has remained a consistent part of the relationship. Whenever Melbourne United needs servicing or product enhancements, a phone call or email is all it takes, described by the club simply as “easy.”
The result
Looking back, Melbourne United considers the move to LED one of the best decisions the club has made. The units have proven reliable, the flexibility to change design and configuration game to game has transformed how the venue presents itself, and the ability to hire the signage out during the off-season has added a further return on the original investment.
As Mark Boyd puts it, “dealing with LED media has just been easy… we look back and we say it was a great decision.”
"Melbourne United Basketball is a repeat customer of LED Media, sourcing our sideline LED among other digital signage. The quality of the product has been great, however it is the support and service that enables us to continue the relationship year to year."
